The Acropolis & Hercules Temple

The building represents an elegant compromise between the Italian tradition of the Tuscanic temples and the late Hellenistic tradition that, starting from the II century BC, gave rise to original architectural forms, experienced in the major sanctuaries of Lazio: The Doric style, locally reinterpreted, appears here more refined and slender than the Greek examples. The original temple’s inscription is very complex, it does not seem to have satisfactory proposals, as currently there are no element to attribute the cult to a specific deity. On acropolis’ upper terrace, during the middle-age, the church of S. Pietro was built, then destroyed by the bombings in 1944, and of which the bell tower is still visible, according to a nineteenth-century reconstruction.
